The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT has concluded the 2025 edition of its Cacao of Excellence programme, recognising the world’s top cacao producers following an 18-month blind evaluation process covering 45 producing origins.
The results were officially announced on February 20, 2026, during the Chocoa Trade Fair in Amsterdam, through four regional ceremonies representing Asia and the Pacific; Africa and the Indian Ocean; South America; and Central America and the Caribbean.
A total of 191 nationally selected cacao samples underwent rigorous technical and sensory assessment under structured protocols. Each entry was evaluated through a blind process and processed into chocolate under standardised conditions to ensure consistent flavour comparison. From this global pool, 50 highest-ranking producers were recognised with Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards based on documented performance.
Among the distinguished awardees was Apoy Benit’s Cacao Agricultural Farming from Calbayog City, Philippines, which received a Silver Award under the Asia and the Pacific category. The recognition highlights the dedication, craftsmanship, and excellence of Filipino cacao farmers, placing Calbayog and the Philippines on the global stage of cacao innovation and quality.
The Silver Award was received by Raymund Uy, Mayor of Calbayog City, together with Officer-in-Charge City Agriculturist Techie Pagunsan, on behalf of Atty. Gerry Dean and Osmeña Tajo of Apoy Benit’s Cacao Agricultural Farming.
The achievement was made possible through the strong endorsement and support of the Local Government Unit of Calbayog, the Department of Trade and Industry Philippines, and the Philippine Cacao Industry Council. The recognition underscores the strength of collaboration between local government, national institutions, and farmers in advancing the country’s cacao industry.
Another Filipino producer, David Christopher dela Serna of Davao City, also received a Silver Award, further demonstrating the Philippines’ growing prominence in the global cacao sector.
The international recognition affirms the country’s commitment to producing high-quality cacao and showcases the potential of Filipino farmers to compete and excel in the global market. END #evchub8 #evcommunities8 #leyteinitiatives #samarislandinitiatives
