MMDA lauds 2nd #MMShakedrill participants

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Atty. Emerson Carlos thanked the participants for the successful conduct of the second Metro Manila Shake Drill Tuesday, June 22.

At exactly 9 o’clock in the morning, the earthquake drill started with a siren – signalling a 7.2 magnitude movement of the West Valley Fault. Hundreds of people performed the ‘Duck, Cover and Hold’ position.

From scenarios of fire at the MMDA office in Makati City, to a collapsed Guadalupe Bridge, the MMDA chair was ferried across the Pasig River then brought to Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City where the alternate Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was put up at the Joint Task Force-NCR open area.

The members of the Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRMC) composed of government agencies, local government units, private corporations, and non-government organizations waited for the arrival of Carlos, who is also the chairperson of the MMDRRMC.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Director Renato Solidum briefed Chairman Carlos of the situation that a 7.2 magnitude movement occurred at the West Valley Faulty that affected Metro Manila and parts of Regions III and IV-A (CALABARZON).

MMDA consultant Mr. Mon Santiago also reported the establishment of communication links in the four quadrants wherein the EOCs have already been activated: West Quadrant located in Intramuros corner Burgos and Bonifacio Drive, in front of Manila Hotel; the South Quadrant located at the Villamor Golf Course in Pasay City; North Quadrant located at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City; and the East Quadrant located at the LRT Line 2 depot in Santolan, Pasig City.

Likewise, the members of the response team from the NCR’s Department of Social Welfare, Department of Health, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Office of Civil Defense, Philippine Information Agency gave updates on information gathered from the ground.

After assessing the extent of effects of the earthquake, the Metro Manila disaster council elevated the matter to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

At the end of the drill, Chairman Carlos again expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed and participated in the metro-wide event. (JEG/PIA-NCR)
